Universal Society of Hinduism Speaks Out Against Overwatch

Really? Overwatch?

I didn't expect everyone to love Overwatch. The world is full of party poopers. As a wise man once said, "every party needs a pooper, that's why they invited you." I did think, however, that it would have been on something other than religion. I mean hell, there was an outcry even before the game launched about Tracer's ass. So I was a little surprised today when I saw that the president of the Universal Society of Hinduism, Rajan Zed, released a statement. Zed suggests that Symmetra's Devi skin is inappropriate. I think it's because not a single figure in Hindu mythology builds turrets, bends space with portals, and fries enemies with an energy gun. Then again, I'm not an expert. I may be wrong on that. Zed is asking that Blizzard remove the skin entirely from the game.

Zed further said that Hindus were for free speech as much as anybody else if not more. But faith was something sacred and attempts at belittling it hurt the devotees. Video game makers should be more sensitive while handling faith related subjects, as these games left lasting impact on the minds of highly impressionable children, teens and other young people, Zed added.

Is Mercy's Valkyrie skin an affront to Norse mythology?

I admit that I don't fully understand this position. Not here. Not now. For one, Symmetra has never claimed to be some kind of mortal form of any Hindu gods. At best, she's cosplaying. I could see calling that tasteless or something, but to condemn it for trivializing and misrepresenting a goddess is a bit much. The biggest thing that gets me, though, is that Zed chose this game to speak against. I don't know about you guys, but I've repeatedly pounded on Shiva, Vishnu, and other Hindu figures in the Shin Megami games. Hell, in Nocturne, I made Vishnu fight for me. And these weren't people dressing up like these gods and goddesses either. The lore of the game flat out says they're the real deal. So I just can't grasp how that's completely fine, but a cosplaying future soldier crosses the line.
