The news is in. Scalebound, the crazy-hyped dragon-riding game by Platinum Games has been officially canceled. Earlier in the day, there was rumor that the project was in trouble. Now, though, official word has been delivered to the press by Microsoft.

After careful deliberation, Microsoft Studios has come to the decision to end production for “Scalebound.” We’re working hard to deliver an amazing lineup of games to our fans this year, including “Halo Wars 2,” “Crackdown 3,” “State of Decay 2,” “Sea of Thieves” and other great experiences.

In other words, they refuse to invest more resources into an innovative dragon-riding game in lieu of three sequels and a pirate game. It's an abrupt end to a game that's been in development for a long time. The news is likely to be a disappointment for a lot of gamers, as our last look at the game was extremely promising. Go ahead and check out this gameplay demo unveiled back in August of 2015.

In 2015, the project looked too close to completion to be canceled. However, it has been about a year-and-a-half since then. Maybe someday, we'll learn what happened behind the scenes. Probably not, though.
