PS4 Hits 100 Million Sold Faster than Any Other Console in History

It beat out the PS2 by two months.

If the console wars still raged (it’s really more of a console scuffle at this point), we all know that the Switch should be winning it. But it’s not. The PS4 would be, since it’s been a wild success from the moment it was released in friggin’ 2013. It’s never really had a slow season, and thanks to that, all the way in 2019, six years after it released, it finally hit 100 million units sold. By hitting that window, it is now formally the sixth most popular game consoles in terms of raw numbers sold – trailing behind, in order, the PS2, the Nintendo DS, the Game Boy, the PlayStation 1, and the Wii. It’s also the fastest console to reach the 100 million units sold mark, which is pretty damn impressive when you consider the competition.

And since we’re still a ways away from the PS5, it probably has ample time to use that momentum to catch up to the Wii (which is only 1.63 million units ahead), although it might need a bit more time if it hopes to catch up to the PS2, which sold well over 155 million units.

That’s interesting enough as-is, but there’s one more interesting nugget to come out of this report: this will be the first year that digital game sales actually surpassed physical game sales. Sony reported that 53 percent of all game sales on the PS4 this quarter was digital (at least, for first-party titles), which is a trend that’s probably only going to grow in the coming months and years.

Which means, of course, we’re fast approaching a destination I think we all kind of knew we were headed anyway: a truly, 100 percent digital age.

But, that’s still some time from now. For the time being: congrats on Sony for earning more money than God. Don’t spend it all in one place.
