Sony's PlayStation 4 has been out for over five years now, and it’s been doing pretty good for itself in that time. It’s hosted some of the highest-profile games of the generation, such as Horizon Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, Bloodborne, and of course God of War. It’s released a Pro version with better graphics and more memory. And of course, it’s sold really, really well. In fact, according to Sony’s financial reports, the PS4 has sold around 96.8 million consoles. Nearly 100 million.

That means it’s only being outsold by the PS2 (155 million), the Nintendo DS (152 million), the Gameboy series (118 million), the PS1 (that’s 102 million), and the Wii (101 million). What’s more, even though people are buying way fewer PS4s than they used to, the console’s current trajectory means it’ll probably surpass the Wii, or even the PS1, by the end of the year. That’d make it the third-most sold console in the world, but even now, sixth ain’t bad.

It’s going to have plenty of time to meet that mark, too, because, according to the very same document, it seems Sony has no plans to launch the PS5 anytime within the next 12 months, meaning that if it is going to come out in 2020, it’ll be much later in the year than we might have assumed. That said, they’re clearly putting a lot of money in making the PS5 the best console it can be, as “much of 31.1 billion yen” will be invested into it. That’s about 2.7 billion dollars. So how much “much” actually means might be questionable and vague but we can assume it’s an awful lot.

So yeah, Sony’s doing good. Better than most, even, since it doesn’t seem like Microsoft or even the Switch are close to pulling in those kinds of numbers. But who knows what the future holds?
