It's been twelve (count em', twelve) years since we last saw the Age of Empires series with the launch of Age of Empires 3, which was met with critical acclaim and limited commercial success. Ensemble Studios has been sitting on the series for a while now, but it was only a matter of time before they broke the silence and brought us the fourth game. And, ladies and gentlemen who survived the solar eclipse, I'm proud to announce that today is that day. We did it.
We made it to the first trailer.
The trailer eschews any gameplay (that's fine for the first one) to instead show off some of the time periods you'll be playing in. We see Greeks in battle, Romans on the front line, Spanish Conquistadors overlooking armies of natives, Native Americans on horseback, and some good ol' fashioned Redcoats loading their musketeers. Seems a wide variety of time periods will be covered in this game: perfect for adding some strategic depth and options to a title.
It's worth note that Ensemble actually isn't the team working on it this time around, though: but they're still in very capable hands, as the new developers are none other than Relic Entertainment, the folks behind Dawn of War. So they've got a lot of experience with this kind of thing.
No word on a release date, but you can sign up for a closed beta right here.
Excited? I know I sure could be!
