Hyper Light Drifter, the hit indie action game from 2016, will be adapted into an animated series for Netflix. The series will be produced by Adi Shankar, the producer behind the Castlevania Netflix series, and Alex Preston of Heart Machine.

Preston, the lead character of the game's development studio, spoke with Polygon recently about it, revealing that they're still quite early in the production process. They're currently looking for writers, even. He also contemplates how the top-down view and creative direction would best translate into a viewing experience.

"The difference between a series and a game is vast in a lot of ways. Hyper Light as a game was pretty atmospheric and kind of overbearing at times. For a series, the question is: how do you sustain and keep your attention on a non-interactive run? Does it get really, really dark and serious? Does it have some levity?"

Shankar has been making a fair name for himself as of late. First gathering mass media attention with Netflix's Castlevania series, he is also producing a Devil May Cry TV series and something with Assassin's Creed. This more or less aligns with Shankar's previous statements, where he describes wanting to be THE man for video game TV adaptions because otherwise Hollywood would "f*** this up."

I'm imagining a Samurai Jack like show. Sweet fight scenes, a bizarre world, often dialogue-less moments, what's not to love?

In the meantime, Heart Machine announced their second game for development earlier this month: Solar Ash Kingdom. Little is known about the game at this time, but a teaser trailer shows a bizarre character "skating" along a stylized 3D environment before jumping toward a large, round monster.
