One of the most highly anticipated games of the year—that isn’t a Metal Gear Solid or a Witcher game—has to be XCOM 2, the sequel to 2012’s remake, XCOM: Enemy Unknown. But while we’re all excited to see what those whacky extraterrestrials have in store for our planet this time (I hope it’s an ice cream party!), it seems we’re going to have to wait till 2016 to find out, because the game has suffered a delay.

From Firaxis, the developer, we have this:

Hello XCOM fans,

We want to give you an update on the release date for XCOM 2. We’ve set a high bar for the sequel and the entire team has been working hard to make sure we deliver a great follow-up to Enemy Unknown. We just need a little more time to make it the best possible game.

With XCOM 2, we want to have more depth, more replayability, and more investment in your soldiers and this extension will give us the time we need to deliver on our promise to you.

We appreciate your patience and continued support as we move towards February. Good luck, Commander!

-The XCOM 2 Dev Team

So it’s been postponed three months: not uncommon and not terrible, but still pretty annoying for those looking forward to the next chapter of the series. We’ll just have to hope the wait makes the game even better than the last!
