Fallout 4 is coming out for PC, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4.

If you want to play with mods, you’ll get to choose between Xbox One and PC, since they both have it.

If you want to get a free copy of Fallout 3 to play while you wait, then your choices are narrowed down again. Congratulations, Xbox One owners, you win this round by a landslide!

In an attempt to both advertise the new backwards compatibility on the Xbox One as well as well as entice those delicious pre-order sales that sustains this industry, Microsoft and Bethesda has announced that any and all Fallout 4 Pre-orders for the Xbox One will net the buyer a free code for a digital version of Fallout 3 for their Xbox One consoles.

Upon purchase, it will arrive to players within seven to ten days, and then you can redeem it either on your Xbox 360 or on Xbox.com. Then, when backwards compatibility reaches the Xbox One, the game will be perfectly playable, free of charge… except the charge of pre-ordering the game, of course.

Now, Fallout 3 was released seven years ago, and is actually pretty cheap over Steam, being only 10 bucks, so for PC gamers... Well, they likely already have it. But this is less about making the Xbox One competitive with PC—it will never be, the amount of mods PC gamers enjoy will be unlimited and the game will certainly still look better—but it is a gigantic slap in the face to Sony loyalists, who will no doubt be biting their tongues in envy. Not only is the Xbox One going to be backwards compatible, but backwards compatible with Fallout 3 to boot?

It’s been a while, Xbox One, but I think you’ve finally got a strong leg-up over the ol’ PS4. Keep it up!
