New characters, new fatalities... and bees... NOT THE BEES!

Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon stopped by the Playstation booth this afternoon to demo the latest game in the series. This was after being featured in last night's Sony press conference, which was a world debut of actual gameplay footage. Even though the game is meant to scale to both current and last gen consoles, the detail reminded me quite of a bit of Killer Instinct on the Xbox One.

The E3 build of the game has 6 playable characters, 4 of which are entirely new characters... something that Boon has said will be the tone of the entire game. Story-wise the game takes place after the events of the last Mortal Kombat game- meaning a large part of the classic MK cast is now dead. That doesn't mean those characters won't be represented in the game though, Cassie Cage was shown on the select screen and explained as the daughter of Johnny Cage and Sonya Blade- having movesets from both of her parents. Other characters are the insectoid female D'Vorah, giant/midget combo (think of Chang in CVS2) Ferra/Torr, and a likely relative of Shao Kahn named Kotal Kahn. Scorpion and Sub-Zero return to the cast as well, but it was shown each character has three variations which will give them different abilities and movesets... to reference CVS 2 again- think of the "ism" system from that game.

Interactable stage elements were also confirmed as well as X-ray moves and the ability to do meter burn versions of moves. Ferra/Torr particularly had some armored throws that look pretty similar to Solomon Grundy from Injustice. I won't spoil the fatalities shown... but if you've ever seen the classic Nicholas Cage movie The Wicker Man... you're in for a treat. NOT THE BEES!

Mortal Kombat X is due for release next year and the select screen had 24 character slots... Ed Boon also hinted that the new final boss will surprise fans (psssst that means it's Raiden). Expect the game to make a playable appearance at EVO next month.
