Vermintide 2, the game about fantasy rats who rise up in rebellion against the RPG trope of using them as level 1 fodder (I assume) is doing quite well these days, sans a few necessary patches and the like. But today, the game is getting one of the biggest updates in quite some time, which will infuse the game with a fresh coat of paint and might even bring retired rat exterminators back into the fray.

The new update adds new cosmetics to the game, as well as daily challenges and new quests to help you deck yourself out for even greater challenges. But the most impressive change is the long-awaited Steam Workshop support, which will allow you to download mods into the game and radically change the entire experience: for better or for worse.

Fatshark has made it clear that there are no off-limit mods, but for the time being having even a single mod installed will move you to a special mod-friendly sever where you can play to your hearts content, but you won’t level up, gain new items, or complete quests. So basically all you can do is faff about: progress will be locked behind official servers, although Fatshark did say that later this summer they plan to allow ‘sanctioned mods’ to operate on official servers, which would be small, harmless quality-of-life mods that won’t disrupt balance in any meaningful way.

Makes sense, if you ask me. They also mentioned that with all these new cosmetics incoming (which includes a bunch of swell new hats), the drop rate of cosmetics will be going up so you can start customizing your hunter sooner rather than later.

So a pretty big update, all things put together. I look forward to seeing what kind of dumb mods the players come up with.
