Using a Third Party Charger Might Break Your Nintendo Switch

Some are safe, however.

With the rise of the Nintendo Switch, so with it came a number of third-party docks and chargers. Unfortunately, a select few products were reportedly "bricking" the user's Switch. Freelance hardware engineering and product development expert Nathan K. took to creating a comprehensive write up of why exactly this is.

Posted via Google Plus, Nathan K. explains that the Nintendo Switch and its dock is saturated with USB-C protocol errors and flaws.

"The +Nintendo Switch Dock #USB #TypeC power supply is not USB-PD spec compliant. As a result it does not "play nice" with other #USBC devices. This means you should strongly consider only using the Nintendo Switch Dock adapter only with the Nintendo Switch (and Dock).

Additionally, it also seems the Nintendo Switch Dock does not "play nice" with other USB-PD chargers. This means you're forced to use a Nintendo-brand power supply."

Whether this was done intentionally or not remains unknown. Nintendo is no stranger to proprietary charge ports. Alternatively, I could imagine how they wouldn't feel the need to expand the Switch's protocols if you already have a designated power supply.

Fortunately, there are confirmed safe options should you find yourself in need of a new power supply. Nathan K. has confirmed that Innergie brand and Delta Electronics brand 45w chargers will function safely with your Nintendo Switch and its dock.

Be careful out there, Switch owners. I'd hate to hear of any more bricked consoles.
