Turtle Rock, the developer behind Left 4 Dead and, of course, the often-forgotten Evolve, has been MIA for the past few months after the failure of their aforementioned asymmetric monster-hunting simulator, which struggled for years and years before it was finally put out of its mercy. When Turtle Rock wrapped it up, they promised that they’d be back before long, working on brand-new projects that would win back the public trust.

It seems that was only half true: because while they are back, they definitely aren’t working on anything new: because it was just announced in a very rudimentary way that their next game will be Back 4 Blood, which is basically Left 4 Dead 3, but as a new IP.

Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Turtle Rock Studios today announced Back 4 Blood, from the creators and development team behind the critically acclaimed, co-op phenomenon Left 4 Dead. Back 4 Blood is designed from the ground-up as an original, premium title and marries the best of what made the co-op zombie shooter so successful with new features and state-of-the-art technology.

I gotta admit, while I’m not exactly “excited” for Back 4 Blood, I am happy to see it coming around. Ever since the most recent Walking Dead game turned out to be a total bust, and Valve basically stopped making video games, we could use a return to the good ol’ fashion co-op goodness of L4D. May as well come to us from the folks who basically created the formula.

That said, there’s a whole lot we don’t know about this project. Instead of screenshots or a trailer, all we have to work with is an FAQ from their community manager, which is basically a whole bunch of questions with one answer: “We’ll tell you later”.

However, they did confirm that they’re focusing on a PC, Xbox One, and PS4 release. So it’ll be current gen at the very least. They also said there won’t be a battle royale mode, but there will be PvP and a campaign. So… it's basically L4D3 in everything but name.

But like I said, that’s not strictly a bad thing.
