Thief Getting a New Game, and a Movie

Coming to steal your heart, or at least your time.

The latest Thief game, launched in 2014 on the heels of Dishonored, didn’t really do so good. Dishonored was was pretty much just a better version of the steampunk-fantasy stealth-action who’s earlier work no doubt inspired its current competitor, and it didn’t help that the latest game decided to make the at-once hardcore and hilarious protagonist of the series a generic grumpy dude with a chip on his shoulder. So the sales were lukewarm and the reviews, more so, but it seems like Eidos Montreal, the developer behind it, the latest Deus Ex title, hasn’t given up on it quite yet.

Straight Up Films, the company behind Jane Got a Gun, Away from Here, and other projects you’ve never heard of, recently posted a landing page for an upcoming Thief movie, which has the following description:

Thief is an action epic poised to be the next great multi-platform franchise.

Originally released in 1998 by Eidos Interactive (Deus Ex) and distributed by Square Enix (Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy), the Thief series has spanned over fifteen years and four sequels continually retaining loyal audiences and attracting new fans with each iteration. Widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever created, a fifth sequel is currently in development to be released in step with this motion picture adaptation.

Steeped in the steam-punk world created by the video game, the film will tell a new chapter in the storied world of the series’ hero.

The writers of the upcoming movie, which has no release date, are listed as Adam Mason and Simon Boyes, who are behind Broken, The Devil’s Chair, Blood River, and even MORE products you’ve never heard of.

So we’ve got two bits of news here: for one, hey, a Thief movie is coming, that’s cool. And secondly, the wording makes it quite clear that a fifth Thief game is currently in the works, which is even neater. Can’t say more than what was posted on the page, but frankly, my hopes aren’t high for this one. Thief, as a series, has only gotten worse as time goes on, and neither the studio or the writers have done anything that inspire any confidence.

But the Thief universe is certainly unique, and the storytelling potential there is strong. At least, if we have the Garrett from the original games, not the latest remake. Then at least it would be a bad movie I could enjoy.
