There are over 30,000 Games on Steam

Steam's biggest selling point has always been its huge library of games -- a selling point that has very quickly become its greatest weakness in recent years, as the lack of quality control means that the platform is mired in hundreds upon hundreds of crappy, poorly-made, broken asset-flips. But we were never exactly sure how many games that actually turned out to be, until recently. Because thanks to Steamspy, we now know that the digital platform for PC gaming has just hit a pretty enormous milestone: there are apparently over 30,000 games on Steam right now, not including DLC or other game-related software.

That’s a lot of games, but that’s probably not a lot of “good” games. Steamspy also revealed that over 53 percent of those games came to us over the past two years alone (which, coincidentally, is when Steam Direct became a thing), with 9,300 games released in 2018, and 6,700 released in 2017.

What does that mean for the average user? Not a whole lot. Most of those games are, as I alluded to above, shovelware. Which means you lucky souls who don’t make a business playing crappy steam games probably won’t ever get your hands on them. It is, however, a fairly harsh criticism of the way Steam does things… and further proof that maaaaybe the Epic Store has a better leg to stand on than we first gave it credit for.

But, that’s still a long ways away. For now, just treat this for what it is: a fun little factoid.
