The Last Guardian Creator Starting a Brand-New Game

It'll be a while before we see it, though.

When you think of iconic Japanese developers ousted from the studio they helped create, people’s thoughts usually begin and end with Hideo Kojima, who was kicked from Konami after some industry drama and went on to start his own studio with ol’ Sony in the wings. But he’s far from the only one, as Fumito Ueda, founder of Team Ico and praised director behind Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian, has also left the team he founded (which, ironically, means he left Sony), and started a brand new studio, dubbed genDesign.

And talking with Famitsu, he explained that he’s already hard at work on a brand-new game that will be very familiar to fans of his old work:

"We're in a stage of various trials. This stage we're in, where we're actually making our ideas to test if they're interesting or not. What we're making now doesn’t feel like an indie game. We're ultimately aiming for something on the scale of Ico, Shadow of the Colossus, and The Last Guardian."

It’s not surprising he would decide to stick to the design philosophy that first put him on the map - after all, there have been a lot of pretenders, but no developer has ever been able to make a Fumito Ueda game as well as Fumito Ueda. In any case, considering the stage of development they’re in and how long it took to get The Last Guardian out to the public, it will probably be a very, very long time before we get the chance to play this particular masterpiece.

But he did say that he would be more than willing to work with other studios to speed things along. And, frankly, those studios would probably be thrilled at the opportunity.

We’ll keep our eyes peeled for any more details on this project.
