Super Smash Brothers Ultimate has been around for a while now, and it shouldn’t really come as a surprise when I tell you that it’s doing really, really well for itself. But you might be surprised to learn just HOW good it’s doing… and why poor Sakurai probably has his life mapped out by Nintendo for the next thirty years.
It was just reported by NintendoSmash.com (and verified by other sites) that Super Smash Brothers Ultimate holds several distinctions in the sales department, most notably, in surpassing Street Fighter II to become the best-selling fighting game in all history.
Specifically, Street Fighter 2, which has been sold and re-sold seven different times, has acquired a grand total of 15.5 units sold since it launched in 1991. Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, on the other hand, has managed to sell 15.71 units in less than a year. It’s also the fastest-selling Nintendo game of all time, with 12.08 of those 15.71 units being sold within the first three weeks of its launch. So it’s slowed down considerably, but selling an extra 3+ million units after the hype of launch is far from a bad deal.
However, it’s still only the second-best selling game on the Nintendo Switch: a distant second too, since Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has sold 19.01 million copies so far.
And to cap off the accolades, this cements Super Smash Brothers as the best-selling fighting game series in the world, with 53.03 million units being sold across every generation. That’s more than Tekken, Dragon Ball, Street Fighter, and Mortal Kombat… combined.
Sheesh. I guess that gives people accusing Nintendo of being too casual-focused something to think about. It also gives people who thought that putting a Fatal Fury character into the roster was weird ammunition as well, since it’s not even in the top 5 of best-selling fighting game series.
Ah well. Congrats for getting even richer, Nintendo.
