Super Smash Bros Ultimate is Already Amazon's 2018 Best Seller

Beating God of War, Super Mario Odyssey, and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.

Every year is a fight for what game will be THE game of the year. So far, 2018 has its fair share of legendary games. We've seen games like Monster Hunter: World, God of War, Far Cry 5, and more. And yet, a game that has yet to even release has them all beaten.

According to Amazon's listing for Best Sellers of 2018 in Video Games, Super Smash Bros Ultimate is the highest video game listing. Below that being Super Mario Odyssey, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and God of War. This is excluding listing for gift cards and premiums console subscriptions, such as PlayStation Plus.

Since Super Smash Bros Ultimate doesn't release until this December, this means that Amazon's best-selling video game of this year is one that isn't even out yet. The listed sales are entirely from pre-orders.

There are a few caveats to this, however. Amazon has always shown to sell Nintendo games better than average. This may be because they organize sales by item. This means that if a game sells 0.5 million copies for Xbox, and 0.6 copies on PlayStation, it won't show up as 1.1 million, but as two separate listings. This means games like Monster Hunter: World may not be best represented, compared to PC and console exclusives. This also doesn't account for non-amazon sales, such as GameStop and Best Buy sales and preorders. Though this means there are more preorders for Smash Bros also unaccounted for.

All the same, this shows the tremendous interest and selling power that the upcoming fighting game has in the current video game market. We'll find out the game's true sale numbers on Nintendo's 2018 Q4 investor reports.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate will be available for Nintendo Switch on December 7 for $59.99.
