Super Mario Cereal is Real, and It's an Amiibo

It doesn't taste like mushrooms, thankfully.

Every day is a great day with two scoops of Mario! Nintendo and Kellogg are working together to create their own Super Mario Cereal. But there's more to this box than the contents; the box itself is an Amiibo.

There haven't been any announcements or press releases relating to the Super Mario Cereal just yet, though it has been appearing on store shelves recently. This cereal is a mixed berry flavored cereal with marshmallows based on powerups scattered throughout.

The UK Twitter account for Kellogg's would later go to confirm that the cereal is indeed a legitimate product and that while it is released in the US, it is not yet available in the UK.

The most interesting part, however, is that the box itself contains an NFC chip, allowing you to scan it into your Super Mario Odyssey game for prizes. This is essentially the same as the Animal Crossing Amiibo Cards, but those didn't deliver my breakfast.

Back in the 1980s, Nintendo had played around with cereal promotion. They worked with Ralston Cereals to create the Nintendo Cereal System, a box containing cereals based on Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda. This cereal was taken down and discontinued in 1989. Personally, I was hoping for the Super Nintendo Cereal System to release.

UPDATE: as of this morning (November 30) Nintendo has issued a formal press release for the cereal confirming the details above. They also clarify that when the Amiibo cereal box is scanned in Super Mario Odyssey, the player is rewarded with "gold coins or a heart in the game."
