If you're trying to play games on your PC, then there's a decent chance you'll be doing that on the Steam Client. Say you want to use a controller with that game you're gunning to play, then there's an even better chance you'll either be using an Xbox controller, which was designed to be used specifically with PC's, or a Steam Controller, which also has clear intent to be used with laptops and PC's. But say you're one of those poor first-world saps who only has a PS4 controller a their disposal... sure, you can technically use it, but it lacks the kind of software and driver support that the other controllers enjoy and so often take for granted. However, the tides are turning for the humble PS4 controller, as Steam has recently announced they plan on better integrating Sony's controller for their games, giving it the same benefits that the Xbox and Steam controllers have.

Specifically, this means you can now configure a PS4 controller for the games you play, allowing you to adjust the button mapping, gyro features, and touch pad. According to one of the presenters to break the news, Lars Doucet, developer of Defender’s Quest:

“Believe it or not, when you use the PS4 Controller through the Steam API, it’s exactly the same as a Steam Controller. You make the exact same API calls, you only get actions, not inputs, and the Steam API takes care of everything."

Does this mean we'll be getting more games that accommodate PS4 controllers? Maybe. But either way, it's a nice little feature to have, and will help accommodate the people who just don't want to shell out extra money for an extra controller they don't need or want. Not world-changing news, but... good. Good news all around.
