Sony Reward Members Can Now Turn Trophies into Store Credit

A very, very, very small amount, but still.

Do you live in the United States? Are you a member of the Sony Rewards program? Do you have a mountain of trophies you earned in-game that you stopped caring about? Then hold on to your butts, ladies and gentlemen, because Sony has officially given you a reason to start worrying about how you perform in-game.

A new section of the Sony Rewards page recently popped up, detailing a brand-new system that will let you cash in your silver, gold, and platinum trophies for PSN credit. Get enough accolades and accomplishments online, and you'll be able to use them to pay for a game, or at least cheapen one. Which sounds like a pretty good deal, right?

Well slow down there bucko, there's a catch: if you expect to be rolling in the dough, then you're sadly mistaken. The money-to-trophy rate is extremely small, and you'll need to put a considerable amount of effort and time in this system to be able to afford anything as simple as a new PSN icon.

Heres the breakdown:
  • 100 silver trophies for 100 points or one point per trophy
  • 25 gold trophies for 250 points or 10 points per trophy
  • 10 platinum trophies for 1,000 points or 100 points per trophy
At 1,000 points, you can trade them in for ten PSN bucks. So you would need 1,000 silver trophies or 200 gold trophies in order to get the money you crave, and since Sony has gone out of its way to strip games of their easy-to-earn Platinum trophies, you actually have to play well if you want to get ten of those bad boys.

On the bright side, it's a free system, and if you've been playing for a long time, you probably have a surprising amount of trophies on-hand to be traded in. So in that respect, it's still a net positive, but if you plan on starting with a clean slate, well you've got a long road ahead of you pal.
