Sonic Movie Director Says They'll Change Sonic's Design

That's good... probably? That's probably good.

So earlier this week… or was it last week? I’m not sure, time has been a blur ever since Paramount released the very first trailer for the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog movie, a trailer that you’d better believe will be getting a in-depth analysis from yours truly later this week. Point is, they released it, and unsurprisingly, people hated it so much that they almost kind of loved it. It got millions of views and hundreds of thousands of downvotes on Youtube, and people have been wondering basically every day, “how could such a thing have happened?”

There have even been very talented people who took the time to “fix” Sonic, mostly by making his eyes bigger and making his mouth… less… that. Less whatever the hell that is.

Point is, the response to the trailer has been less-than-positive. Which seems to have come as a surprise to the director, Jeff Fowler, who tweeted this out yesterday:

“Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear... you aren't happy with the design & you want changes. It's going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be.”

…Okay.

I’m not saying this is bad news: hell, I think most people would call it good! But if the movie is set to come out this November, it’s a LITTLE BIT late to start redesigning the titular character. Which leads me to think one of three things:
  • This is a joke.
  • They already knew this design was terrible, released it as a marketing ploy, and the “better” version is already well underway.
  • They’re only going to fix the glaring issues, which in this case is probably the eyes and the teeth.
Regardless of which one it is, we’ll find out by November… for better or for worse.
