Rockstar Confirms Red Dead Redemption 2 Online Mode

Not that surprising, really.

This might be the least surprising announcement of the month. Rockstar Games has officially confirmed the inclusion of an online multiplayer in the upcoming Red Dead Redemption 2.

The western open world game will follow much in the same path as Grand Theft Auto V. The base game will release, with the multiplayer online launching about a month later. And based on the announcement, they're expecting it to also have some issues.

"As with most online experiences of this size and scale, there will inevitably be some turbulence at launch. We look forward to working with our amazing and dedicated community to share ideas, help us fix teething problems and work with us to develop Red Dead Online into something really fun and innovative."

They describe the game mode as one with regular updates, narrative elements, cooperative gameplay, and vs multiplayer. It sounds much like the same format as GTA: Online, but Rockstar North director of design, Imran Sarwer, believes that it will remain unique to their audience.

"We think there will be a lot to love about Red Dead Online for fans of Grand Theft Auto Online, but we think that Red Dead Online will generate its own audience ready for something entirely new. However, exactly what form Red Dead Online will take as it finds its feet, we are not sure ourselves, but we think really want a focus on role-playing and morality. That may all change as the game comes out, but that's the direction we are heading in now!"

In the mid-to-late life of Grand Theft Auto Online, much of the community grew distasteful of the extremely high prices items and vehicles. Maybe believed this to be an effort to encourage more microtransactions, purchasing in-game money with real-world cash. It's not clear if a similar format will be implemented in Red Dead Redemption 2. Time will tell.
