Politicians will do anything to engage with their constituents, but very few have done it with the earnestness -- and the savviness -- of current US Representative and future US President Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. This is helped by the fact she's always had a strong but gentle tie to the video game community. She was one of the people to call into H.Bomberguy's internet-celebrity star-studded Donkey Kong 64 charity fundraising marathon. She quite famously has her own island on Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and even made "house calls" to her constituents' islands. And now, it seems, she's solidifying her ties to the gaming community by becoming a Twitch streamer.
It's a pretty wholesome story: she reached out to her sizable Twitter followers and asked if anybody would like to use the current Twitch hit Among Us as a tool to encourage voting. Unsurprisingly, quite a few people said they would love to see that, and more than a couple of popular Twitch streamers leaped at the chance to actually play with her, which would of course go a long way in spreading her message.
The only problem with the plan was that she didn't actually have the rig necessary to stream games. That has since been remedied.
The latest news is that while the stream hasn't actually started yet, she's gotten almost everything else out of the way. She's got a verified Twitch account, over 10 thousand followers, and at the time of writing is finding mods and ensuring that the eventual stream will run smoothly.
Needless to say, this is pretty cute. I don't think it's going to become a trend in Washington or anything -- most of the folks there are too old for this kind of thing, and unfortunately, miss Ocasio-Cortez is not the trendsetter we all wish she was -- but for what it's worth, I hope it goes really well.
And it probably will.
