Psychonauts 2 Coming This Year, Allegedly

Psychonauts, the most successful and perhaps most iconic game to come out of Tim Schafer’s Double Fine productions, was released in 2005, and it’s sequel was announced in 2016. In the years since, Double Fine has put out quite a few games, from Broken Age to the remaster of Day of the Tenticle, and even got acquired by Microsoft — but if you asked the average gamer, they’d probably tell you that as far as they were concerned, the whole studio was in hibernation until the sequel to their magnum opus is released.

Well, we still know very little about this kind of hotly anticipated title, but thanks to a new tweet — rather poignantly made on the anniversary of Psychonauts release — we know that Psychonauts 2 is, at least in theory, set to come out later this year.

The tweet reads as follows:
 

And yes, Psychonauts 2 is this year and yes I've been mentioning that here and elsewhere for a while but no I can't tell you when because someone from THE COMPANY would arrange for a mysterious "cactus accident" to happen to me... But it is real. It is playable. It is coming.

So that means that at some point in the next six and some change months, we’ll be able to play Psychonauts 2. Realistically, that probably means Microsoft is gunning for a holiday release, as if it was coming this summer we probably would have gotten a trailer or something by now, and I doubt Microsoft is going to just randomly release a game that has so much hype potential. At that point, we’d just have to see if the dang thing is actually fun to play, and, well… that’s a harder thing to guess, since Double Fine, while not a “bad” studio, has certainly struggled to put out anything as noteworthy or critically acclaimed as Psychonauts 1.

But hey, let’s keep hope alive, shall we?
