PR Manager Explains Why Sonic Drives a Car in Racing Game

We recently reported on Team Sonic Racing's announcement, where the car-based racing game puts a newfound focus on teamwork while in a fast-paced setting. The game has sparked the same question that comes up every time there's a non-traditional Sonic game: Why is he in a car?

Sonic the Hedgehog is referred to as the fastest thing alive. With game's like Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games, people asked how Sonic didn't blow the competition out of the water in the racing tracks. Other titles, such as Sonic Racing and Sonic Ryders, asked why Sonic was using these alternate modes of transportation, instead of simply running on foot. Finally, Sonic PR and Social Media Aaron Webber has responded to why the blue ball of cool is in a car:

So we're going to set the record straight just in case. If he's not in a car guys, the race is over before it's begun. You know this. You know he's fast. He's faster than cars, so we gotta equalize the playing field. So please, spread the word if you see anyone curious why he's in a car, there you go.

Considering the "it's cool to play fair" nature of Sonic, this makes a fair bit of sense. Though not everyone agrees. Various social media users have expressed their discontent with this explanation, claiming it's a "poor excuse."
