There has been a fair bit of chatter lately about when Sony will announce their next console, presumably called the PlayStation 5. In a recent interview with the Wall Street Journal, PlayStation CEO John Kodera expands on the company's plans for the coming years.

We will use the next three years to prepare the next step, to crouch down so that we can jump higher in the future.

These comments came shortly after an investor presentation the day prior, where he stated that the PlayStation 4 game console was nearing the end of its life cycle. Kodera also indicated that the company will invest further in subscriptions and online services.

We need to depart from the traditional way of looking at the console life cycle. We're no longer in a time when you can think just about the console or just about the network like they're two different things.

Releasing a new console generation would certainly be considered a big step. So if Sony intends to release a new console, it won't likely happen for at least another three years.
