We've been in the middle of a console war between Microsoft and Sony for two generations now, but this kind of rivalry is nothing new to gamers. The console wars back in my day had slogans like Genesis Does What Nintendon't. These days it's just Greatness Awaits and The All-In-One Entertainment System... that's about as generic and soulless as half the games that have come out lately. If you like these old man rants, be sure to check out my article about why Modern Video Games are Too Easy.

So for old farts like myself yearning to dust off our old cartridges and play games on TVs with modern inputs, Hyperkin has you covered. They've already released the Retron 3, which was a console that played NES, SNES, and Genesis carts-- with the addition of wireless controllers and support for your original controllers as well. The Retron 5 is the next-gen of systems that play old-gen games. Here is everything new you can expect--

  • Added support for Famicom, Super Famicom, Megadrive, Gameboy Advance, and Gameboy/Gameboy Color
  • HDMI support with upscaled 720p resolution
  • Save States and a new User Interface
  • Each supported system now has 2 controller slots, controllers can now be used cross platform
  • Improved audio and a redesigned controller
  • Due out around July for under $100

Sega Master System and GameGear support are still noticeably missing, but we need an excuse to buy the Retron 7 right?
