Gearbox isn’t winning any fans as of late, considering their recent atrocious behavior towards their employees. Still, even the devil was an angel once, and Gearbox is more than capable of being a good studio even if their CEO is absolutely the opposite of a good person.

In a move that was probably planned well in advance of the COVID-19 pandemic, Gearbox has just announced they’re adding a new mini-game to Borderlands 3: and playing it could actually make the world a better place. Check out the trailer:

Introducing the Borderlands Science arcade in Sanctuary III, a new way to earn unique rewards in Borderlands 3 while helping advance medical research by mapping the human gut microbiome.

Next time you're aboard Sanctuary III in Borderlands 3, keep an eye out for the newly installed Borderlands Science arcade game in the corner of Doctor Tannis' infirmary. Developed in conjunction with McGill University, Massively Multiplayer Online Science, and The Microsetta Initiative, Borderlands Science is a puzzle game that benefits the real-world scientific community as you play.

When you crack open this mini-game, you help fix errors computers make while trying to process the DNA of foreign microbes in human guts through a simple puzzle game. In the process, you help scientists understand these microbes better (which in turn will improve medicine, exercise, food, and the like) and will earn in-game rewards, such as new cosmetics, and in-game boosts that will improve things like EXP gain and increased damage.

So all in all, the only bad part of this is the script of the video, which drips the “Borderlands” flavor, which means it’s terrible. I’m sorry, but it’s been like twenty years since this series has been funny.

Although if I recall Battleborne wasn’t funny either so I guess it’s just a Gearbox thing.
