In December the Overwatch team announced a large expansion to the Path to Pro program they have going out for Overwatch League. This program is for players who aren't with a competitive team to have a chance to make it to the top. With this an Overwatch Contenders season has been added to the schedule with over $3 million USD worth of prize money to be dished out this year.

With the growth of Overwatch League new regions have been opening up Contender regional leagues such as Europe, North America, South Korea, China, Pacific Islands, Australia and South America. For more info on what teams made it into the league either through an invite or purchasing one through a certified organization go to the Overwatch Contenders page.

They also added the first Overwatch Open Division Season 1 where over 17,000 players came to test their skills and try to make it in the big leagues. Top teams are now invited to go to the Contenders Trials this year to try and make it as a true Overwatch League team.
