Overlooked at E3: Aztez

A stylish brawler with turn based strategy and Aztec influences

With the dust still settling from last week's E3 2014, there's a few titles that went largely overlooked. Also there were games that unless they had some exclusivity deal with Microsoft or Sony, there was no way they were going to have a huge booth or appear in a press conference.  I'll be posting up a few I found to be particularly interested in playing.

Aztez has been in development for 4 years now, so it is not like this year's E3 was a world debut or anything of that sort. That didn't stop this game from wowing members of the press that got a chance to go hands on with it this year. To sum up Aztez... it is a black and white 2D brawler with turn based strategy based on ancient Aztec culture.

As you expand out your empire using a world map and plotting your turns, the game then switches to a 2D combat system with lots of combos and crazy moves inspired by games like Bayonetta. There's also a great deal of randomized elements in your encounters to ensure each playthrough is different. This actually reminds me quite a bit of the SNES classic ActRaiser and the way it similarly mixed these genres.

Other key features include-
  • 4+ complete weapon sets: the spear, the club, the ritual knife, the legendary obsidian sword, and more.
  • Finely tuned array of enemies based on the Aztec archetypes: the Eagle warriors, the Jaguar warriors, the Noble warriors, the combat Priests, and more.
  • Customizable avatar; beat the gear off of your enemies and wear it!
  • 30+ combat environments based on real Aztec cities.
It really makes me happy to see Indie games have a presence at a show as large as E3. Aztez is due out later this year on Steam first, with console releases to follow and even planned Oculus Rift support.
