Octopath Traveler, the popular "HD 2D" adventure RPG by Square Enix, had everyone's attention when it released on Nintendo Switch. And now it'll reach a little further as an iOS and Android smartphone spinoff was announced.

Revealed in a Japanese YouTube video, the Octopath Traveler prequel will be released for iOS and Android devices. The video, running 1 minute and 38 seconds long, showcases the game's signature 2D graphics as it would appear on smartphones.

The game itself doesn't look that different from the original release on Nintendo Switch. We do notice a simpler combat interface, with a large attack button. We also noticed that the end card describes it as a Single Play RPG. It's not clear if this means there is no multiplayer functionality, or if you can only play through the game once. We'll know for sure when the game releases.

The Octopath Traveler prequel is set for release in 2019, with pre-registration in progress. There's no word at this time if the game will be available in non-Japanese markets, nor what the title's price would be.
