If you know me at all (and you probably don’t, bless) you know I’m not one to shy away from reporting on things just because I personally like them. And this story here quantifies that pretty much to a tee, so if you’re looking for subjective news reporting, feel free to click elsewhere: because I want to talk about the new OC remix album, dammit, and you can’t stop me.
So here’s the skinny: OC Remix is a website dedicated to hosting high-quality remixes of video game music. And occasionally, they release special albums dedicated to certain games, remixing every – or almost every – track as a collaborative effort between multiple artists. It’s always fun, especially for music fans, although they aren’t always news-worthy.
But their latest remix album is, on the merits that it’s an album for Skies of Arcadia, the all-too-often forgotten RPG masterpiece from the Sega Dreamcast days, which was remastered and re-released for the Nintendo Gamecube. It is a great game, one of the best ever made, and frankly the fact there isn’t more fans out there for the game (and that Vyse doesn’t show up in Smash, at, like, all) is literally a crime against humanity and the entire video game industry. This album doesn’t make up for those sins, but it helps, somewhat, especially when you’re jamming to the sick remixed beats of this wonderful RPG.
So go listen to it, and when you’re done with that, you should go ahead and play the game. Maybe if enough people join the Skies of Arcadia facebook groups and the subreddit, we might see more of these games and characters than the occasional fan project and a cameo in Valkyria Chronicles.
And also listen to the original soundtrack. Not for nothing but “Bombardment 2” is literally the best battle theme for a video game ever made.
