Nintendo to Re-Cast Male Byleth's Voice Actor in Post-Launch DLC

Turns out the original voice actor is a scumbag.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses released last Friday, and I’d really rather be playing it right now than writing this. But life goes on despite how loudly I shout out the window that I want it to stop, so here we are. Anyway. In Fire Emblem: Three Houses, you play a dude (or a lady) named Byleth. Byleth is a largely silent protagonist who speaks in short text boxes, but he occasionally grunts or lets out a one-liner or two when he levels up. It’s not exactly a prestigious role, and for the English dub, Nintendo cast a relatively well-known web creator and actor, Chris Niosi.

…But here’s an interesting little nugget: in the mobile spin-off, Byleth is voiced by someone else entirely, Zach Aguilar.

Why is that a big deal? Well, as people are quick to point out, very recently ol’ Niosi here was had several accusations of sexual harassment, abuse, and assault levied towards him very recently, with former partners accusing him of just about everything shy actual, physical rape. Moreover, Niosi even acknowledged and confirmed these accusations on his tumblr account, admitting that he’s been a terrible person.

So people figured that Nintendo, having caught wind of this problematic voice actor, decided to replace his role with a new actor for the mobile spin-off. And some people suspected that this may mean his voice would be replaced in the main game as well. This turned out to be true, as Nintendo confirmed earlier today:

"After assessing the situation, we decided to re-record the character’s voiceovers in Fire Emblem: Three Houses and Fire Emblem Heroes with another actor. The new voiceovers will be included in a future patch.”

Given how little he speaks, it won’t be much work to re-record the lines. And I suppose it’s good on Nintendo to listen to their fans and take the accusations seriously.
