Our sympathies go out to Metroid fans today as Nintendo announces a major delay for Metroid Prime 4.

A recent announcement video by the game company shows senior managing executive officer Shinya Takahashi speak about the upcoming sci-fi action shooter. According to him, they are more or less scrapping what they have and handing the rights over to Retro Studios to finish the project.

Takahashi explained that they were unhappy with the quality of the game at its current rate. And instead of creating a subpar game, they'd rather let someone else try.

"Nintendo always strives for the highest quality in our games; and in the development phase, we challenge ourselves and confront whether the game is living up to that quality on a daily basis. If we're not satisfied with the quality, we aren't able to deliver it to our customers with confidence, and the game will not live up to our fans' expectations.

From this perspective, we have determined that the current development status of the game is very challenged, and we had to make a difficult decision as a development team. We have decided to re-examine the development structure itself and change it."

Takahashi reassures listeners that this was not a decision made lightly, offering Nintendo's apologies. They are all aware of the disappointment this delay will bring.

"It will be a long road until the next time we will be able to update you on the development progress, and development time will be extensive."

Retro Studios is known for their work on the Metroid Prime and Donkey Kong game series. So it's not like they're tossing the IP over just anyone.
