New Sonic Boom Announced for Some Reason

Too impatient for E3? Or something more...?

So, while Sonic Boom may have been the worst-selling Sonic game to date—and a disappointing step backwards after Sonic the Hedgehog had started to show some actual improvement over the years—the cartoon version of Sonic Boom is actually going pretty well, and not from some fluke. While turning the characters into over-broad clichés (at least, moreso than they already were) is disappointing, the show’s got some good gimmicks and some genuinely good jokes, so, that success is not undeserved.

Whatever the case, Sonic Boom is staying for the time being, and now we have Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice. Check out the trailer below.

I’ll say this for Sega: that’s some damn good music. Although to answer the question poised in the trailer: water. When you mix Fire and Ice you get water. Or a pretty badass Robert Frost poem. I digress.

To create an entirely new experience, Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice will infuse fire and ice elements throughout gameplay, enabling new abilities to play out in special character moves and interactions with environments. The new title also delivers gameplay that enables players to run through the game at top speed, or take their time with deeper exploration and puzzle play.

New to the title is the introduction of Bot Racing, a supplemental game tied to the single player story with multiplayer gameplay. The new Bot Racing feature is an extension of Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice that is purely about racing and speed, where a user will unlock character themed Bots to challenge friends on fast courses or tracks.

It’ll be coming at us on the 3DS exclusively later this year. Of course, we don’t know how good it is, but one thing’s worth noting: a week away from E3, and Sega chooses now to reveal it? Promising, actually, because that likely means Sega has more impressive stuff it wants to show off and doesn’t want to waste time on Sonic Boom. At least, that’s my hope.
