After a small number of copies managed to release early, people have confirmed that the upcoming Mortal Kombat 11 will remove access to a number of features if you don't have an internet connection.

It began with a now-deleted tweet by Daanish Syed, the Senior UI Artist at Netherrealm Studios. The tweet claimed that the game will require an online connection to earn gear and play the Towers of Time mode and access the Krypt. This sparked a discussion on the Mortal Kombat Reddit, where people expressed displeasure with the decision, especially for people who intended to play the game on the go with the Nintendo Switch version of the game.

The Reddit thread then attracted the attention of a ResetEra thread about the game. The thread had speculated that the restriction would be resolved in the day 1 patch. This was until ResetEra user Tyaren was able to pick up their copy of the game early. Providing countless screenshots as proof, they were able to download the day 1 patch, and still experienced the limitations of the various features without an online connection.

While most people have a reliable connection to their consoles, many players consider this an act of bad faith to the players. Neatherrealm has not spoken about the issue at this time.

To give the game some credit, Tyaren spoke plenty of praise for the game, especially in regards to the graphical quality. Be careful browsing the ResetEra thread, though. It's full of screenshots and spoilers.

Mortal Kombat 11 releases on April 23 for PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.
