Might & Magic X Servers Shut Down, Cutting Off Access Past Act 1

DRM Gone Wrong.

Its a fair decision to shut down the servers to older games. But care needs to be taken to ensure its done right. Might & Magic X, the fantasy RPG from Ubisoft, has accidentally cut off a majority of itself after shutting down their servers.

Fans of the game noticed that the servers were shut down on June 1st. This removed certain online components. It wasnt until a little later did they discover that this conflicted with Ubisofts DRM efforts. While a single player game, Might & Magic X checks in with the online server to verify its authenticity. Without this verification, the game will not allow players to progress beyond the first act. It will also cut off access to bonus content and any DLC.

Fortunately, players have found a way to edit the .xml files to allow them to progress in further acts. The DLC and bonus content remains inaccessible, however.

Now 20 days into the month, with no word or update by Ubisoft, what remaining fans there were are either abandoning the game for good or asking for action by platforms like Steam. Might & Magic X is still available for purchase on the platform. And with a majority of the game not accessible without modification, they are claiming that its being falsely promoted.

While we never played the game ourselves, we certainly have no reason to try now. Our sympathies to anyone considering the game or those that recently purchased the title.

UPDATE:

Ubisoft has now removed the game from the Steam store page. This is most likely due to the issues listed above. Ubisoft has not issued a statement as to why the removal, though. Additionally, those that already own the game still cannot access a majority of the content.
