Metro Exodus already looks pretty good. But its about to look even better. Developers DeepSilver have announced a free Enhanced Edition upgrade for PC players, while also revealing what to expect for next gen consoles.

Detailed in a Steam post, DeepSilver has announced an Enhanced edition for the popular post-apocalyptic adventure game. Meant for high-end PC hardware, it enables powerful quality features like Ray Tracing, DLSS 2.0, and a bunch of under the hood changes.

They explain that while the game offered Ray Tracing on PC at launch, it was only available for top end cards and more traditional rendering methods were still used for older hardware. But with the implementation of Ray Tracing on the PS5 and XSX, they decided to overhaul their 4A Engine to implement the technology further.

We have built an all-new Fully Ray Traced Lighting Pipeline that brings a number of optimizations, upgrades, and new features to the Ray Traced Global Illumination and Emissive Lighting that we pioneered with the original release of Metro Exodus, as well as an upgraded implementation of our powerful Temporal Reconstruction technology to further boost resolution, visual detail and performance.

For frame of reference, the header image was an in-game screenshot provided by DeepSilver, using the Enhanced Edition features.

As a result, Enhanced Edition will require a Ray Tracing capable GPU as a minimum spec. And to implement that limit, theyre making it a separate product instead of adding it into the base game. The same technology will be used toward the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game, allowing them to make the most of the console's powerful hardware.

In short: Itll be free DLC for anyone that owns the game.

Metro Exodus: Enhanced Edition will be pushed out to the EGS, Steam, and GOG store. It will be free to download for anyone that owns the game.
