Of course Super Mario Odyssy would show up at E3. Other than Metroid Prime, which no one knew about, it was Nintendo's big-ticket item and the game everyone is most excited for. And looking at the trailer and gameplay that were released for E3, I gotta say: the hype is there, it is real, and it is well-deserved. Nintendo has a habit of putting gameplay first, and asking what they could do differently to make sure each game stays fresh. With the last of Nintendo's big Mario release, their answers were "put it in space" and "multiplayer", but their innovation this time around is "possession".

Confused? Give this trailer a watch...

So yeah, the whole gimmick this time around is that Mario can throw his hat not only as a weapon and as a way to collect coins, but also to possess enemies, creatures, and objects through a level and use it to help him collect whatever magical thing he'll need to beat Bowser and stop his wedding with Princess Peach. The levels, as you may have noticed, are stepping away from the self-contained puzzle-platforming worlds we've seen in the poultry plumbers more recent outings, and returning to the free-roaming exploration we saw in Super Mario 64.

It looks very cool, and did I mention the music? That is some snazzy music. I'm all for a jazz-infused Mario experience.

As is usually the case for Nintendo showings at E3, they also revealed a half-hour gameplay trailer of the Wooded Kingdom, one of the many levels you could expect to see in the final game. Let's give it a look, shall we?

Super Mario Odyssey, pending any delays, will be launched on October 27, 2017.
