The competition is intense.

While VR is rising in popularity, it's still yet to gain traction in the mainstream market. It's not beating out any consoles at this rate, and it's not likely to achieve mainstream popularity in the coming years unless a few things change. One of these things is the price. Luckily, there is competition in the VR industry, and when one company lowers their hardware price, competitors have to follow unless they offer a significant amount of unique features.

In the case of the HTC Vive, they really had no choice but to drop their price in response to the Oculus Rift's 'temporary' $200 slash in price. The HTC Vive is now listed at $599. There's never been a better time to get your hands on a VR headset, especially with the release of Doom VR, Fallout VR, and Skyrim VR coming in the near future.
