According to a recent post on the Hogwarts Legacy Twitter account, the game launch has been delayed until 2022 to ensure quality.
We would like to thank fans from around the world on the tremendous reaction to the announcement of Hogwarts Legacy from our Portkey Games label. Creating the best possible experience for all of the Wizarding World and gaming fans is paramount to us so we are given the game the time it needs.
Hogwarts Legacy will be released in 2022.
Hogwarts Legacy, announced back during a PlayStation Showcase in September, is an upcoming open-world action adventure game set in the Harry Potter universe. Developed by Avalanche Games (Just Cause, Rage 2), and published under a Portkey Games (a branch of Warner Bros exclusively for managing Harry Potter stuff). It was originally marked for release in 2021. Not much else is known about the game at this time, just that it isn't centered around Harry himself, just in the same universe.
As exciting as the idea of a triple A open world game sounds, not everyone is enthusiastic about it. One reason is because of J.K. Rowling's recent dedication to various Trans exclusionary radical feminist beliefs. She has gone on various platforms to promote and defend anti-trans ideals. She also has a pen name that shares the title with a famous white supremacist. Her controversial status even led to Warner Bros making a statement, a claim to not agree with her ideal, but not intending to make any changes due to it.
Regardless, the delay is probably wise. The gaming industry is seeing a strong wave of lashback after Cyberpunk 2077 launched with a large amount of bugs and technical issues. It was a solid example that no matter how well marketed a game is, if it doesn't play well, people will be angry. Choosing to delay and ensure quality is much safer than releasing it too early.
Hogwarts Legacy will release some time in 2022.
