This is the gorgeous world of Severed

For those of you that missed Guacamelee!, it was a charming 2D side-scrolling metroidvania style beat-em-up featuring Lucha Libre. So naturally the only way for DrinkBox Studios to follow up that game is with a 2D first-person gesture controlled dungeon crawler with a female amputee lead character. The gesture-based combat is really the most peculiar aspect of the announcement... with no platforms announced the controls could hypothetically work with Kinect, any touchscreen device, or even a mouse. A first-person game using 2D visuals is also something I haven't seen in a long, long time... but the game looks admittedly gorgeous. This is Severed.

From the press release-
  • Take on the role of a heroine in this first-person, dungeon crawleresque adventure
  • Mysterious highly stylized surreal world to explore
  • Natural-motion based mechanics to combat enemies and explore/interact with the world
  • Nonlinear gameplay gives players autonomy over upgrade paths
  • Light RPG elements, including spells and items that progressively upgrade the main character
  • Battle multiple enemies simultaneously, each with their own strengths and weaknesses to discover
  • Original soundtrack from Juno nominated band YAMANTAKA // SONIC TITAN and kulintang ensemble Pantayo
Severed currently has a Spring 2015 targeted release date, as more news develops on this very unique title-- I'll be sure to post it.
