The popular series Gears of War recently released its latest installment, Gears of War 4. Despite all of the hype that The Coalition tried to get for the game, sales haven't been all that great. After the first week, the game sold about 617 thousand copies worldwide. Over 50% of those copies were sold in the United States, with the rest finding their way through Europe and Japan. While 617 thousand certainly isn't a small number, it is only ranked 4th of the 6 titles in the series.

These are the first week sales that the series has seen for all of its games:
  • Gears of War 3 - 2.96 million copies
  • Gears of War 2 - 1.87 million copies
  • Gears of War: Judgment - 760 thousand copies
  • Gears of War 4 - 617 thousand copies
  • Gears of War - 610 thousand copies
  • Gears of War: Ultimate Edition - 280 thousand copies
Perhaps we've entered a world where people don't like Gears anymore. I remember a few years back when everybody was battling through waves of horde on their Xbox 360s. A franchise that has been around for this long should be selling more than this when a brand new game is released. I mean, it only sold 7 thousand more copies than the original Gears of War. It could be the takeover of a new company or even the fact that people have lost interest in the fast-paced third-person shooter. The game was launched about a month ago, but maybe people wanted to wait for Christmas. Either way, The Coalition needs to go back to the drawing board and see how they can get some more people on their servers.
