So one thing that makes esports interesting to watch – arguably one of the only things, speaking as a fan – is the commentary. While it’s thrilling to watch a match play out, more often than not, it’s the commentators that help you understand the depth of thinking that goes into each play, the amount of skill required, and just how impactful certain moves are. In many ways, the commentary acts as a necessary translator, bridging the lingo and talent of the highest levels of play with more casual viewers so they can better appreciate the spectacle they are witnessing.

So during last night’s r/StreetFighter online tournament, it was a little disappointing when the commentators – who had been doing their job with a casual, relaxed flair, as these online tournaments are far from professional fare – decided that they could do no better commentary than an endless barrage of fart noises.

The reason for this is ol’ fashioned elitism, as I understand it. The final bout was between two F.A.N.G players, F.A.N.G being a difficult, annoying, and unpopular character in the game. And, perhaps annoyed that they weren’t able to talk about characters they cared about, the commentators made farting noises.

Which one of the competitors, FGC Jesus, didn’t appreciate.

“I don’t like being treated that way. I’m not any different than anyone else who works hard in this game. Sorry my character is annoying to play and you don’t know how he works. But like, I made it to winners finals. I was proud of myself. I get that it was a joke and stuff. I forgive you guys, I just legitimately got hit where it hurts in my feelings.”

The good news is that the subedits organizer, Joe Mundy, immediately tried to make amends through a public apology:

I understand and apologize fully. That decision to ruin the audio was fully on me. That was my call and both you and @dee_ancer (the other competitor) are world class players who don't deserve that type of treatment.

The fighting game “community” is having enough problems right now that an overused fart button is one of the smaller issues, but it’s never a waste of time to apologize.
