You either stop playing as the hero, or play long enough to become the villain. Sephiroth, the one-winged angel of Final Fantasy 7, has been confirmed as the next DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros Ultimate.

Announced during the 2020 Game Awards in a new cinematic and gameplay trailer, we see the antagonist in their full potential, complete with a strained conflict with Cloud, the hero of the same game.

Did you make an audible gasp when he killed Mario? We sure did!

It's not terribly clear how the character will work mechanically at this time. His tremendously long sword (known as the Masamune) means he might have the longest melee range of any of the swordsmen. And of course he has a counter attack.

One thing we noticed was an alternate form. Sephiroth can enter his Winged form, which appears to be more powerful. It also appears to have a number of alternative actions when in that form. How this function works is not entirely clear, but will likely become so in due time.

He also has a shirtless alternate costume. Make of that what you will.

It comes as less of a surprise to see Sephiroth added to the roster, particularly when compared to Clouds release. Final Fantasy 7 Remake released earlier this year, winning the acclaim of critics and consumers alike. Besides, with the previous fighter being Steve from Minecraft, its a bit hard to be surprised by anything. Even so, it was an unexpected decision and we look forward to trying him out for ourselves.

Sephiroth will become available for download later this month. The purchase will also come with a new custom stage based on his grand rise in Final Fantasy 7. He will be free for anything that has purchased the DLC Fighter Pack 2 for Super Smash Bros Ultimate.
