EA Announces a 3 Million Dollar Apex Legends Esports League

A pretty big deal for a pretty big game.

It’s been a while since Apex Legends has gotten the number one spot in the news cycle, but just because no one’s talking about it as much as Fortnite doesn’t mean they’re not still around. The new Battle Pass went a lot better than their first one, people are still enjoying the new map, and hey, they’ve even got a holiday event happening that’s centered around everyone’s favorite hologram-abusing playboy. But EA and Respawn aren’t happy with a solid second place in the world of Battle Royale: they’re ready to go big leagues.

This is why EA just announced that early next year they’re going to kick off a new esports league called the Apex Legends Global Series. The grand prize? 3 million bucks, making it one of the bigger esports events out there.

Here’s how it works: as long as you meet the eligibility requirements (which will include an age restriction, most likely, and passing several qualifying tournaments), you can participate. Even better if you can bring two friends, as these are still based on three-man squads. Throughout the year, there will be four Majors held with the first three being proper matches as 100 three-man teams compete for a share of a $500k prize pool. The top 60 teams will then be invited to the final fourth major, where they’ll be battling for a one million dollar prize pool.

But if you thought you could be a pro cause you’re really good at hiding, then think again: your team will be ranked by a “match point” system, which means the more people you take down (and the longer you last, of course), the more points you get, making it very possible for a group to not be the last one standing and still win the match. It promotes aggressive play, which is important for the watchability of e-sports.

"Competition is at the heart of Apex Legends. We expect that esports will play a big role in the future of Apex Legends and it all starts here, with the Apex Legends Global Series. We look forward to seeing who, out of our millions of players, will become true legends of the arena."

The first qualifying online tournament will take place on January 25 and 27. And if you fancy yourself a competitor, here’s the link to get started.

Good luck.
