More gunfights with monsters in ruins! Yay!

People Can Fly first hit introduced themselves to the gaming world with 2004’s Painkiller, a game that broke up the monotony of modern first-person shooters by being a frantic, run-and-gun massacre of hordes of demons: think of it like Doom, except instead of killing one giant monster, you’re killing a whole lot of smaller ones.

Anyway, it was a hell of an introduction, and the studio has since worked on other memorable titles, such as Bulletstorm, the Gears of War series, and friggen’ Fortnite: Save the World. They have quite the impressive resume, to say the least, and now they’re going to add one more game to it: Outriders, which was revealed today during Square Enix’s E3 presentation.

As Mankind bleeds out on the planet of Enoch, the Outriders track a mysterious signal in this #E32019 Official Announcement Trailer.

#Outriders is a 1-3 player, drop-in-drop-out, co-op shooter, set in an original dark and desperate sci-fi universe. This brand new IP is developed by People Can Fly the creators of Gears of War Judgement and Bulletstorm and is published by Square Enix External Studios and is releasing Summer 2020, on Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC.

I’ll be honest: at least for me, I’d actually not have paid much attention to this game if it wasn’t being made by People Can Fly, because the trailer made it look fairly… generic? Like I feel like we’ve seen this game before. Or maybe we’ve just seen this setting before – the dark, dirty, gritty gunfights with monsters in the rubbles of a destroyed civilization. Either way, it didn’t exactly inspire, but I’m willing to put my faith (if not my preorder money) in the idea that People Can Fly can make a real winner out of it.

In the meantime, all we know is we can expect more details about the game by winter(?!), and it’s slated for an Xbox One, PS4, and PC release.
