Doom Patch 6.66 Revamps Multiplayer Mode, Makes DLC Free

That was unexpected

If you played last year's smash hit Doom, then you know that it was well-loved for its single-player mode, not its surprisingly comprehensive yet fairly shallow multiplayer. Which is why it was all the more a pity that all three chunks of DLC that came out for the game and were covered by the season pass, weren't expansions to the main game, but rather, content for the multiplayer mode, ranging from new weapons, maps, and demonic transformations.

Seems someone's flipped a switch at Bethesda, though, because with the lats, much of patch 6.66 (appropriate and not even kind of accidental) they're bringing some serious changes to the whole system.

For one, they're retroactively 'canceled' their season pass, which means that all the content in all three DLC's is now absolutely free to the public. All 9 maps, 3 guns, and 3 transformations will now be public domain, as well as the new items and armor sets that previously only Season Pass holders could enjoy.

It also gets rid of the random unlocks the game had relied on in the past: now, instead of getting a random hodgepodge of upgrades and armor sets, you can designate what you want to unlock and start working your way towards those specific goals, rather than just hoping and praying you get the helmet you've been looking for. In light of this, veteran players can either opt to keep all their current swag, or reset their accounts and start grinding the new, exciting way. That said, all levels will be lost: everyone will go back to 0.

Another big change is the abandonment of the "Hack Module System", which allowed you to give yourself a temporary buff at the start of a match. Now, a new rune system, much like the kind used in single player, will take its place, offering players the chance to really customize their character with unique boosts and abilities.

This is all on top of upgraded UI and other quality of life improvements, as well as good ol' bug fixes. You can find the full list of changes here.

To entice the newbies, Bethesda is making the game free-to-play for the weekend, starting Today and going until Saturday. As for me, though, who's had Doom for a while? I might actually go back to the multiplayer mode now, this looks really dope.

But I might be the minority in that.
