Development for Ghost Recon: Breakpoint has Ended, Including Their NFTs

It looks like the Ubisoft devs have reached their own breakpoint. The publisher has announced that work on additional content for Tom Clancys Ghost Recon: Breakpoint has come to an end. And yes, that includes their in-game NFTs.

The official Ghost Recon Twitter account recently posted, revealing that an update to the shooter game received last March would be the games last. The game servers would be maintained, but no new content would be coming from here on out. GamesIndustry.biz was able to confirm that this will include the Digits, the companys name for their in-game NFT system.

In case you hadnt heard originally: about three months ago, Ubisoft announced their own NFT platform called Quartz, which would integrate the blockchain technology into their video games. It began with Ghost Recon: Breakpoint, where players could purchase cosmetic items with bespoke numbers on them. This drew the ire of much of the community, many of which believing that NFTs are not beneficial to a gaming environment and that this decision was done with intentions of greed.

Ubisoft issued a thanks to everyone who purchased one of their NFTs, saying that You own a piece of the game and have left your mark in its history.

At current, theres no word as to what might come of the NFTs. Some speculate toward the idea that they will be able to transfer these items into other games, but theres been no evidence from publishers or developers to support the idea. And with the game they're tied to entering its twilight days, the longevity of the NFTs themselves are uncertain. Will the newfound rarity cause them to become valuable? Or will their being associated with a no-longer-developed game cause them to become obsolete?

To be perfectly frank, this is the exact outcome we expected to see. The NFTs were made, sold, and now seemingly forgotten about, while the creators are moving on to cash in on the next most trending concept. We have and continue to believe that NFTs as a whole are only being used to squeeze easy money from consumers with the false promise of future value. We wont berate anyone who owns a Digit for being upset about this. But this is the risk you take with these things.

What are the odds that their next set of NFTs will be for Forza Horizon 5?
