Death Stranding is Not a Stealth Game -- it's a "Strand" Game

It's a brand-new genre invented by Hideo Kojima.

I don’t think it’s quite accurate to say Death Stranding is “coming”: based on the trailers and the videos we’ve seen, it would be more accurate to say it’s “happening”. Maybe you don’t so much play it  but instead relax, down a few mushrooms, strap on a VR set, and prepare to travel to another friggin’ universe. Or maybe the trailers are intentionally confusing and messy and the game itself is very straightforward. It would certainly be helpful if we even knew what kind of game we were getting into, but it seems even that is too much to ask, because Kojima, in his very typical… Kojima-ness… can’t seem to answer that question without drowning in his own self-congratulatory pretentiousness.

Here he is on Twitter:

As I'm getting similar questions so I shall re-post. DS is not a stealth game. Could move subjectively but not a FPS shooting game either. By incorporating with the concept of connection(strand), it's totally brand new genre called action game/strand game(social strand system).

Oh, sure. Right. Obviously. A new genre. Of course it is.

You know for some reason this is making me flashback to when Metal Gear Solid V was being released and people made a big deal about the stripper sniper Quiet, which was pretty much three very specific fetishes rolled up into one awkward, confusing character. Ol’ Kojii here said that when we actually played the game we’d feel bad about sexualizing her and that it was for a very good reason… but not only did the game fail to make us feel bad about it (no one sexualized her half as much as the game itself), but the reason was stupid and nonsensical.

Maybe Death Stranding is more like Quiet: The Full-Length game.

Look, man, I like his games as much as the next guy, but the dude could really stand to be tethered to reality rather than only occasionally visiting it.
